Discover two of South Canterbury's most charming country towns on a scenic journey from the coast to the foothills of the Southern Alps. Enjoy Caroline Bay, Geraldine's artisan food and forest landscapes, Fairlie's famous gourmet pies and the spectacular Mackenzie countryside.

What to Expect

Your journey begins at the Timaru I-site once you have disembarked from the cruise ship. Travel through Timaru and along Caroline Bay, enjoying views of the Pacific coastline before heading inland across the Canterbury Plains. Your guide will introduce you to the history, farming heritage and landscapes of the region.

Arrive in the picturesque town of Geraldine, nestled beneath the foothills of the Southern Alps. Geraldine is known for its boutique shops, artisan producers, galleries, gardens and beautiful native landscapes. Explore the town centre and Geraldine’s independent shops and local food producers. Visit Barker’s Food store & restaurant for a taste of South Canterbury. There is also a car museum and a military museum, or if you prefer to stretch your legs the park like domain is centrally located.

Time has been allowed for lunch in Geraldine at you own expense.

After lunch we leave Geraldine and follow the scenic road towards Fairlie. The landscape gradually changes from fertile Canterbury farmland to the wide-open countryside of the Mackenzie a scenic viewpoint along the
No visit to Fairlie is complete without a stop at the famous Fairlie Bakehouse. Enjoy a freshly baked pie or coffee.
Take time to explore the boutiques on the main street or visit the Fairlie Heritage Museum. Explore fascinating displays reflecting the district’s early farming, transport, railway and rural history.

Departing Fairlie we return to Timaru to rejoin your cruise ship. Enjoy sweeping views across farmland toward the mountains and Mackenzie Basin. There will be opportunities for photographs and a short stop to take in the scenery. Relax and enjoy the changing scenery as you travel back across the Canterbury Plains. Your guide will share stories of the region, its people, Māori heritage and rural history. Take home memories of a day filled with culture, history, friendly towns, and quintessential New Zealand scenery.
