Dunedin is a city full of culture and history and also conveniently close to wildlife reserves and unspoilt nature. See both sides of the city in one day on this small-group tour. Take in the central sights, such as the Railway Station and the steepest street in the world, Baldwin Street. Stroll through the manicured gardens of Larnach Castle on the way to the Otago Peninsula, home to albatross, seals, penguins, and sea lions.
This tour commences at 8:45am from the Visitor Terminal Building on the wharf. If the cruise ship is arriving late, the tour time will be automatically adjusted to start 30 minutes after the ship arrival.
Your first stop will be at Signal Hill Road. Situated 400 meters above sea-level, this is one of the best lookouts in Dunedin. The tour then takes you to the Baldwin Street, which is the steepest Residential Street in the world according to the Guinness book of records.
Our next destination is University of Otago. join your guide for a short 1 minute walk to see the oldest university in New Zealand – an architectural masterpiece.
After exploring the university, there will be a stop at Dunedin Railway Station to admire the architecture and take photos.
From there, you will travel through the Otago Peninsula. Enjoy the jewel in the crown of our local coastal scenery where we’ll make a few stops for you to take everything in. This scenic route takes you to the Larnach Castle.
Enjoy the grounds of Larnach Castle – the gardens are of international signifigance and the views of the Otago Harbour are special. Here, you will also get a chance to get something to eat from the Ballroom Cafe. All tour members can choose to go inside the castle at additional cost.
Your next destination is at Penguin Place. Enjoy a tour of this unique Yellow-Eyed Penguin Reserve where we aim to find the rarest penguin in the world during the breeding season. The elusive Yellow Eyed Penguin is the third largest penguin in the world and listed as ‘critically endangered’ – learn about this flagship species from our professional nature guides. You are likely to encounter NZ fur seals and Little Blue penguins here.
There will be also a stop at Taiaroa Head, where we’ll look for one of the largest sea-birds in the world – the Northern Royal Albatross. For those who are interested in visiting, Royal Albatross Centre, you can choose it from the optional extra from the booking calendar.
Finally the tour then returns you to Port prior to the ships departure.
