Depart Timaru by road, travelling inland through the country townships of Pleasant Point, Cave and Fairlie before ascending Burkes Pass and reaching the Tekapo Basin. At the top of Burkes Pass you will immediately view the magnificent scenery of New Zealand’s Southern Alps.
The tour proceeds to the tranquil turquoise coloured waters of Lake Tekapo with its famous Church of the Good Shepard and the statue of a Mackenzie Dog. The tour will then proceed up to the Mount John Observatory, 300 meters above Lake Tekapo and providing you with magnificent 360 degree views and photo opportunities of this entire region.
The next stop is Lake Pukaki with Aoraki Mount Cook, Australasia’s highest mountain, as a backdrop. The next stop is at the Aoraki Mount Cook village at the base of this famous mountain, where there will be time for lunch, at own expense.
The return journey to Timaru will follow a similar route to your outbound journey, but will also include the canal road between Lakes Pukaki and Tekapo.
The man made canal joining the two lakes as part of the high country hydro-electricity scheme is the only man made structure in the Southern Hemisphere that can be seen from space. On the canal road, time permitting a stop will be made at a High Country Salmon farm.
