Depart Timaru by road, travelling inland through the country townships of Pleasant Point, Cave and Fairlie before ascending Burkes Pass and reaching the Tekapo Basin. At the top of Burkes Pass you will immediately view the magnificent scenery of New Zealand’s Southern Alps.
The tour proceeds to the tranquil turquoise coloured waters of Lake Tekapo with its famous Church of the Good Shepard and the statue of a Mackenzie Dog. The tour will then proceed up to the Mount John Observatory, 300 meters above Lake Tekapo and providing you with magnificent 360 degree views and photo opportunities of this entire region.
The next stop is Lake Pukaki with Aoraki Mount Cook, Australasia’s highest mountain, as a backdrop. The next stop is at the Aoraki Mount Cook village at the base of this famous mountain, where there will be time for lunch at the Hermitage Restaurant which is included in the excursion cost.
Following lunch you will drive into the Tasman Valley and walk up the old terminal moraine of the Tasman Glacier and view the newly created lake Tasman
The return journey to Timaru will follow a similar route to your outbound journey, but will also include a visit to a Salmon Farm located just outside the High Country Township of Twizel.
You will see the man made canal joining the two lakes as part of the high country hydro-electricity scheme is the only man made structure in the Southern Hemisphere that can be seen from space.
Time permitting a brief tour of the Timaru township will conclude your day.
This option departs Timaru at 10.30 am returning to Timaru between 6 and 7 pm, This will ensure you arrive at the Cruise ship before departure.
